Future of Bangladeshi Web Series
Recently, the show business is buzzing about censorship of
web page. Supported the talk about the town, The Daily Star - Star Showbiz held
an Uncensored with Rafi Hossain live episode on “Future of Bangladeshi web
series.” The guests for the episode were Amitabh Reza Chowdhury, Piplu R Khan,
Nurul Alam Atique, Abu Shahed Emon, Shameem Akhtar, S A Haque Olike,
Shahiduzzaman Selim, Masum Reza, Animesh Aich and Bonna Mirza. During this
interview with Rafi Hossain, the versatile panel brought forward the importance
of using web platforms and what they hope for the longer term of the industry.
Amitabh Reza Chowdhury
"In these current times, I find it hard to form
projects where I can fully express my emotions and not get criticized by
people. I’m honestly scared to form movies or web series sometimes because I do
know that if I make something that folks might find even a touch indecent, I
might be putting my life in danger . I even have even seen that some people
take small out-of-context clips from an internet series and spread it around.
This really hurts me to ascertain people do that. If you are doing not like
something, then give constructive criticism regarding why you're against it
rather than sending threats. There are samples of many great films which can't
be released because people spread around out-of-context clips from it and
everybody began to call it vulgar.
Regarding web series and therefore the
platforms where they're released, i need to means that they're not audience
based. Cinemas or television are audience media, but the streaming platforms
have users. There’s an enormous difference within the psychology of an audience
and a user in my opinion. The producers during this new medium has also changed
tons. The people that subscribe these platforms become the producer as they pay
to subscribe. We must also confirm that the people running these platforms
realize what they're doing. If they're just people that want to form money in
whatever way possible, it'll cause more harm for us. This is often a totally
different medium from what we are wont to. The mentality, the way it works, the
business side, it's all different from the film or television industry."
Piplu R Khan
"The pandemic provided us with an excellent opportunity
to return forward with constructive solutions, instead of concentrating on the
minor issues. i think that this discussion regarding the longer term of web
series has the right timeliness value because it sheds light on the forthcoming
post-pandemic situation of arts and culture. We are heading towards a
replacement normal and now's the time to adapt to the changes and find internal
and external ways to beat the challenges. So, keeping the longer term in mind,
there's hope for better, at an equivalent time threat for the industry if we
cannot make use of the right methods. For 50 years now, our culture has held
onto an excellent past where artists have given us remarkable work of art.
But,
what we fail to understand is that times have changed; we not have that glory. We’ve
become a minority within ourselves because whenever we attempt to express our
viewpoints, we've an apologetic approach to every other. I feel that we've a
problem of proximity not only among ourselves but also with those that create
policies for our industry. We’ve a generation who is growing up with practices
of internet and technology. Our focus immediately should get on what we will
offer for them with regard to theatre, television and cinema in our country. I
feel that we'd like an entire rebuilder and reformed structure in our industry.
We should always be allowed to function with our contemporary sort of work,
with creative liberty and authorization. It's time we should always unite to
save lots of ourselves and not let others decide the longer term of our
industry."
Nurul Alam Atique
"In the TV industry, there's an enormous crisis
happening as there's a shortage of stories. All the stories that are made
revolve round the same conventional idea. If we attempt to be too progressive
and maintain an excessive amount of vulgarity in our web series, we'd be headed
to an identical crisis. There are things that folks might do reception, but
that doesn't mean we've to point out it in our projects. If we just follow
industries from other countries and base our projects on their representation
of sexuality and obscenity, we'll make a really big mistake. We should always
do our projects keeping in mind what the industry are going to be like within
the future. So, we should always not do anything which may damage the industry
in any way. After the pandemic is over, we all got to sit and discuss how we
will confirm that those that add the industry can work properly within the
future. We are handling a totally different quite medium. The issues we may
encounter are going to be difficult for us to face. We’ll see tons of
individuals trying to require advantage and manipulate this medium. There are
tons of individuals, both ahead of and behind the camera. We’ve never been
ready to unite and supply a voice for the people. We been busy with ourselves
for therefore long, but now's time for us to return together and work to save
lots of this new medium from anyone who might attempt to manipulate it. "
ABU SHAHED EMON
"In recent times, thanks to the unprecedented crisis,
audience or viewers have turned to web platforms for entertainment. The
increase of various web platforms, new web contents, viewership, then on has
always been a subject of dialogue among directors and producers within the
industry. However, this pandemic has allowed us to hold forward a focal
discussion on the longer term of Bangladeshi web series. i think this
discussion benefits in bringing forth different viewpoints regarding the scope
we've for the enrichment of web contents and the way we will reach bent the
Bengali speaking masses round the globe post-pandemic. To form that happen,
we'd like an action plan for audiovisual platforms.
So, we are able to tackle
the pandemic and post-pandemic crisis. We’d like to speak about different
elements like cinema halls, OTT platforms and speak up about improvements. We’d
like to speak about the necessity for education, training and workshops on the
concepts of media and technology. We should always speak up about government
support, tax incentives on film festivals then on. We’ve lost our freedom of
expression over time. So, I feel that it's necessary to debate and perform a
practical guideline keeping all the market changes in mind. We should always
summarise all our points and let our government know that this is often what we
would like in our industry."
SHAMEEM AKHTAR
"The debate about obscenity in movies and who should be
responsible of censorship has been ongoing for quite a while now. I think that
it's entirely subjective. Back in our time, despite significant adversity,
including that from the mainstream media, people spoke up about this issue.
They expressed their opinions and brought it into the sunshine, and created an
area for this to be discussed. Nowadays, these matters aren't talked about, and
that we got to find out why that’s. We’d like to spot our lacking and make
changes, and speak up about this matter once more.”
SHAHIDUZZAMAN SELIM
"As an artist, I might need to say that I might never
want an avenue of my work to be closed because it does need to do with my
financial situation. If people are diverted from television to web platforms,
the revenue getting to them will stop. Moreover, the creators of those are
view-hungry. They need their shows to realize popularity immediately, in order
that they upload it on YouTube. Therein case, how will they get the revenue for
his or her work? They might have used a platform almost like Netflix or Hoichoi
to make sure that the audience has got to contribute to observe it. With the
increase of social media like Facebook in Bangladesh, it seems that everybody
may be a critic now. They’re exposed to the works of international creators,
which they love, but when it involves the works of our country, they're
extremely nit-picky. They blame the creators. But, how is it the creators'
fault? They need to figure. If they knew that the exposure would be limited to
those that contribute, they might work harder and express themselves more. The
subject of decency is totally up to the individual. They decide if their work
is decent or not. This is often true for films, series or paintings. What one
will and won't show is entirely personal. I even have worked with most of the
people we're lecture today, and that I have complete faith that they're those
who will revolutionise films and web series alike. What I would like is to form
sure that we will hold web series above anyone who might sully it. There’s a
clear solution to the present which is taking it to the govt and asking them to
seem into the kinds of content we might deem inappropriate. However, the govt
is extremely likely to ban web series as an entire. We’ve to form sure this
doesn't happen. "
BONNA MIRZA
"The discussion of indecency in media, especially in
web series, is sort of unnecessary in my opinion because who decides what's
decent and what's not? Where is that the standard of decency and who creates
it? i feel that we should always concentrate more on how we will use and
introduce new and old platforms to display the works of our creative minds
within the global market. The apparent indecent material that are beginning do
have ratings, so it's ultimately up to the audience to make a decision what
they need to ascertain. If we are to limit the exposure, we've to also believe
how we will do this since everything is call at the open anyways. I think that
we'd like to ask ourselves if sexuality is inherently obscene and what truly is
decent and indecent. If we will answer these, I feel we will progress. Web
series, at the top of the day, are products, in order that they should be
created, produced and promoted. We’d like to be ready to use this new platform,
in order that we open a replacement area of opportunities for the show business.
Finally, I even have to mention that we must stop pointing fingers at women, be
it for his or her clothes or attitude. Many female actors are victims of such
over the years, and this issue is saddening. We’d like to maneuver faraway from
this. "
